Polish Presence X CTM 2015

CTM 2015 has collaborated with the curatorial team at Krakow's Unsound Festival to promote a roster of musical acts representative of the strong and vibrant current scene in Poland. This alliance manifests itself through performances by Polish artists scattered through CTM 2015's programme.

On Saturday the 24th at YAAM, Warsaw-based producer Zamilska will join forces with a number of Berlin acts (OAKE, Grebenstein, Shaddah Tuum, KerriOake, and Franz Bargmann) to help launch the latest release by sinister industrial duo OAKE. Zamilska's latest release, aptly titled UNTUNE and met with great acclaim after the viral success of her single “Quarrel,” is marked by heavy-handed, sludgy beats whose military, arduous quality is reflected in the album’s track names (“Army,” “Effort,” “Enemy,” “Flag”).

Piotr Kurek, who straddles the worlds of free jazz, musique concète, psychedelia, and drone and will open for Craig Leon at HAU1 on January 29th, and We Will Fail will bring her unique techno aesthetic built from field recordings, tape samples, synthesizers, and electronic drum kits to the programme at Berghain on the same evening.

A week later, on Saturday, January 31st, the remaining three Polish acts will surface, again at YAAM, all associates of the Skoczów-based Mik Musik.!. initiative (“aint no label, aint no collective, just some expression, action, and freedom”). RSS Boys is a shamanistic techno project combining analogue hardware with e-drums managed and performed (in veils) by two nameless Polish artists. Their latest release, NOOW, was delivered via cassette label Sangoplasm, and the one before that, W DONT BLV N HYP, via Mik Musik. Ignited by a meeting in Africa and inspired by the transformative potential of the drum circle, the project celebrates the archaic roots of techno through exploring tribal musical traditions at once intricate and gut-level, provocative and hypnotizing.

Sound artist and experimental musician Pawel Kulczynski feels equally at home building instruments from scratch, developing video installations, producing saturated, glitchy, and atmospheric invitations to dance, and investigating "uncertainty, random occurrences, laziness, boredom, and psychedelia" (in his own words) by way of all these media. As Wilhelm Bras, the moniker under which he’ll appear at CTM, he released an LP on Mik Musik in February 2013. He also makes regular guerilla appearances in the forgotten places of the industrial age as the power generator- wielding tropain, and in 2010 started the initiative Fragile Boredom, which creates a network and platform for exchange between artists, experimental musicians, scholars and the public.

Finally, Wojciech Kucharczyk, the founder of the Mik Musik.!. community that’s helped foster the growth of the two aforementioned projects, will play on the same night at YAAM under his real name. After over a decade of artistic experiments as or as a part of Retro*sex*galaxy, Mołr Drammaz, Iron Noir and The Complainer, 2013 saw Kucharczyk’s decision to pursue raw, noisy, mechanized dance music via hardware under his real name.

The annual Unsound Festival in Krakow has exhibited one of the premiere European offerings of experimental music and art, both on its home turf and away, now in New York, London, and Adelaide. It is a kindred spirit of CTM's in its adventurous programming of the aural avant-garde from club-oriented electronic music to improvised acoustic music and thematically-intertwined visual art.

Rounding out CTM's Polish presence this year is a new partnership with Mi Magazyn, founded by Polish label Monotype Records head Jakub Mikołajczyk.
