Lecture by Josh Kun

We tend to think of borders in visual terms: a line in the sand, a fence, a wall, a checkpoint, a surveillance tower. In this multimedia talk, MacArthur Fellow and Berlin Prize recipient Josh Kun— an author and curator based in Los Angeles— explores the sonic and musical resonances of geopolitical borders.

What do walls sound like? What music moves through them? What role does sound play in border militarization? Beginning with the US-Mexico border but listening to borders throughout the world, Kun will take us on a musical and sonic tour of borders and borderlands, from political theater and security to sound art, pop music, and the frequencies of everyday cross-border life.
