Premiering new and adventurous configurations of pop music from young Berlin-based artists, Berlin Current is an initiative led by CTM Festival, in collaboration with Berghain, Boiler Room Berlin, No Fear of Pop, BLN.FM, The Quietus and the ICAS network.
Established in summer 2013, the initiative's first year supported over a dozen emerging Berlin-based musicians through performances within the Polymorphism and n ≠ e (not equal) concert series at Berghain, at CTM Festival, and at several Boiler Room Berlin events. Two creative commissions were also awarded, and, following mentorship under veteran producer Stefan Betke (Pole), premiered live on stage during CTM 2014.
Now evolved into a year-round project, Berlin Current entered its second year with an extremely busy schedule of showcases at festivals such as Unsound, MUTEK.MX, RIAM, and TodaysArt among others, numerous local appearances at CTM’s Polymorphism series at Berghain, as well as several Boiler Room appearances by artists supported by the programme.
An impressive number of Berlin Current artists will also be featured at CTM 2015. First, a concentration of artists will share the stage on Saturday 31.1. at Yaam, including Berlin Current newcomer Jesse Osborne-Lanthier, post-techno experimenter Ketev, Janus affiliate KABLAM, and Olle Holmberg, who also appears under his Moonwheel moniker on a separate night. Over on the second stage, Sarah Farina will bring along a troupe of friends associated with her Through My Speakers label and collective.
A significant number of Berlin Current-supported artists will also be speckled throughout the festival: enigmatic HD dance music producers Amnesia Scanner, the ultra-modern cryptographer TCF, androgynous futuristic project Born in Flamez, the synth-heavy rRoxymore, and DJ Opium Hum. The multifaceted Phoebe Kiddo appears as part of the CTM x RBMA Tune Out Finale concert at Astra. Not to miss is also a choreographed presentation celebrating German duo OAKE’s recent album release, which will be supported by a liveset from Berlin Current newcomers Shaddah Tuum, as well special guests.
