Precarity seems to be a given for many working in creative industries. Often lacking support, consistent work, access to affordable health insurance, and so on, freelancers face a number of substantial difficulties. Platform co-operative SMart aims to alleviate these stresses by providing administrative assistance and other resources. Additionally, as a co-operative, SMart is owned by its members, and all profit made is used to assist freelancers further.
Henrietta Mehlis will provide an introduction to the co-operative, addressing why such a project is necessary, and how it might benefit artists.
Sarah Joy Lynch is a Berlin-based social entrepreneur focused on community organising, communication, and music. She is the co-founder and managing director of aequa, a community for social equity.
Henrietta Mehlis is SMartDe consultant for freelancers. As a co-operative, SMartDe assists freelancers by taking over the majority of their administrative tasks and duties. Beyond that, members benefit from payment guarantees, expert consultation, and networking, as well as access to social security including health, care, pension, and unemployment insurance.
