Welcome to CTM 2019!

Across a series of concerts, club nights, an exhibition, talks, and other formats, CTM 2019 invites both longtime and new artistic collaborators and partners to collectively consider the struggles that come with balancing continuity and changeability. 

Here's a programme overview to help you navigate this year's extensive programme. We look forward to welcoming you to Berlin!

Skating to Adventurous Music

Skatehalle

Roller skate in the gargantuan Halle am Berghain. Running throughout the festival and beyond, the Skatehalle promises stellar soundtracks courtesy of an array of adventurous artists. Bring your skates (or rent a pair) and practice your roller skating skills to eclectic and free-­roaming DJ sets.

CTM 2019 Theme

Persistence

With Persistence, CTM 2019 examines the aesthetic and societal potentials and pains of perseverance, and of its opposite: the transient and the provisional, and considers the struggles that come with balancing continuity and changeability.

Open Collaborative Laboratory

MusicMakers Hacklab

MusicMakers Hacklab is a weeklong open, collaborative laboratory hosted by Peter Kirn, Lintang Radittya, and Andreas Siagian. It allows practitioners from a range of disciplines to find new ways of exploring cross-cultural hybrids that imagine future topographies of sound and music performance. Open to walk-ins from the public, the Hacklab also features four Input talks by artists/technologists, which are open to the public. Hacklab fellows will present the culmination of their week of experimentation at the Hacklab Finale on Sunday February 3rd.

Research Networking Day

The Research Networking Day provides a platform to exchange ideas and experiences for students and researchers from different European graduate and postgraduate programmes traversing the fields of audio, arts, media, design and related theoretical disciplines.

CTM 2019 Exhibition

Persisting Realities

CTM 2019's exhibition, titled Persisting Realities, presents the work of artists grappling with our ever-changing realities. Responding to uncertainty and flux, the artists of Persisting Realities hypothesise, untangle, and imagine ways of persevering. How might we cultivate joy? How do we find agency, and how do we locate or build common ground?

Installation

Raster.Labor

With the premiere of Labor, seminal electronic imprint Raster and CTM celebrate a collaboration almost as old as the festival itself. Byetone + Mieko Suzuki, Dasha Rush, Frank Bretschneider, Grischa Lichtenberger, and Robert Lippok will take part in the inaugural edition of the piece, utilising sparse hardware setups to craft perpetual, regenerating compositions.

The Mantis

Nik Nowak will premiere his new sound sculpture, "The Mantis" in a face-off against his earlier “Panzer” loudspeaker tank across a border fence, harkening back to the sonic wars that took place during the Cold War at the German/German border in the early 1960s. Live musical interventions by Nowak and sub bass addict Kode9, as well as video projections by Moritz Stumm, will punctuate the installation’s weeklong showing within Halle am Berghain.

The Other Citizen: Archive

What forms might citizenship take within today’s global environments? Are there new practices of civic participation to be found outside the identitarian politics of nationhood? With The Other Citizen: Archive, Brandon LaBelle responds to such questions. He will be present developing the archive through the reading and recording of conversations, as well as by engaging in rough presentations with invited guests.

Connecting Radio Art & Performance

CTM 2019 Radio Lab

The CTM Radio Lab is dedicated to exploring the pairing of the specific artistic possibilities of radio with the potentials of live performance or installation. This year the Lab will support new works by Aurélie Nyirabilaki Lierman and Israel Martínez. The Radio Lab is commissioned by Deutschlandradio Kultur – Hörspiel/Klangkunst and CTM Festival, in collaboration Ö1 Kunstradio and ORF musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst. Media partner: The Wire.

Focus on Southeast Asia

Nusasonic at CTM

Adopting a multi-perspective approach, Nusasonic is a collaboration between CTM Festival and Yes No Klub (Yogyakarta, Indonesia), WSK Festival for the Recently Possible (Manila, The Philippines), and Playfreely/BlackKaji (Singapore) that explores how contemporary sound practices enable connections and dialogues within the Southeast Asian region, and with Europe. Thanks to Nusasonic, a large number of musicians and projects from Southeast Asia will be featured in the CTM 2019 programme.

Citywide Partner Programme

Vorspiel 2019

Vorspiel is a citywide programme of events before and during the transmediale and CTM festivals. In 2019 it counts 58 participating initiatives and project spaces, the largest number to date! Vorspiel 2019 will launch its 9th edition with an opening event on 18 January at ACUD Macht Neu.

SET X CTM

CTM and SET festivals continue their collaboration. Following the 4th edition of SET in July 2018, which took place in Tehran, the organisers join forces once again to present a number of special artists and commissions at CTM 2019.

Live from Berlin

Berlin Community Radio x CTM

CTM will collaborate with BCR – Berlin Community Radio to provide a live radio broadcast that extends the reaches of the festival's tentacles by giving CTM artists the chance to elaborate on their live sets in an informal context.

Sound Heterogeneous Art and Performance in Europe

SHAPE X CTM

Renewed for four more years and co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, the SHAPE project reunites 16 European non-profit organisations active within the ICAS – International Cities of Advanced Sound network to create a platform that aims to support, promote, and exchange innovative and aspiring emergent musicians and interdisciplinary artists with an interest in sound. Several supported artists and educational / networking initiatives appear at CTM 2019.

As in previous years, the CTM Festival will take place parallel to and in collaboration with the transmediale/festival.

Special Partner Event

MONOM x CTM 2019

CTM 2019 returns again to MONOM, Berlin’s Center for Spatial Sound. The programme spans new virtuosic experiments in 4DSOUND, sound sculptures of past commissioned works by adventurous and experimental music innovators, and ends in a second edition of an overnight extended listening session, offering multiple occasions and formats through which to engage with deep and multi-dimensional listening.
