Ghanaian music producer and DJ Gafacci has been making beats for the better part of 10 years, but has only recently gained broader recognition. With a string of EPs and singles released online over the past three years, Gafacci has been part of the rise of experimental African club music.
Gafacci, aka Michael Gafatchi, grew up in a musical family; his father Sega played in the famous Juju artist Ebenezer Obey's band. He was introduced to electronic music making through a friend, learning to use Fruity Loops, Ableton, and Cubase while in high school. His knack for creating unique beats lead Gafacci to collaborate with Ghanaian vocalists Sarkodie and D-Black, before eventually producing music for BET Cypher Africa, a showcase for upcoming talent across the continent, in 2010.
In 2017, Gafacci produced “I Like Your Girlfriend,” his first track with MC Bryte. This caught the eyes of Famous Eno and Murlo, and Gafacci followed it up with his collaboration with Moni “Juana” on Mixpak’s Holiday Bundle. 2018 was a prolific year for Gafacci; he continued his partnership with Bryte, contributing to his album, Too Good For Your Liking; worked with Famous Eno on the Music For Clubs EP; and produced two solo EPs, Ahunda and Chop Box Vol. 1.
Gafacci has graced the bills of numerous acclaimed stages, including Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda, Oslo World, Chalewote, and Fusion Festival. Although Gafacci has been active for several years, a exciting new chapter is emerging for this dynamic and eclectic producer.
