Listening for Peace

Benefit Event with Pauline Oliveros & Ione

On Saturday, 6.2 at HAU1, after Pauline Oliveros’s initiative, she and her partner and collaborator Ione offer a benefit event dedicated to the philosophy and practice of Deep Listening. All proceeds will be donated to the emergency refugee shelter at the Turnhalle of the Hector-Peterson-Schule, which neighbors the HAU3 in Kreuzberg.

Pauline Oliveros describes Deep Listening as "listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what one is doing." Her Deep Listening Institute’s mission statement notes: "the technique explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary, selective nature— exclusive and inclusive—of listening. The practice includes bodywork, sonic meditations, interactive performance, listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination and dreams, and listening to listening itself. It cultivates a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness and other creative skills vital to personal and community growth. Plus it’s a ton of fun."

Participants are invited to enter the stage and sit or lie down comfortably on the mattresses provided for a one hour meditation with Pauline Oliveros and Ione. They are invited to listen for 45 minutes in silence. At the sound of the chime, listening begins and continues until the chime sounds again ending the meditation. This is Pauline Oliveros’s third appearance at CTM, and Ione’s second.
