Talk by Joe Muggs

Joe Muggs's first book, Bass Mids Tops: a Social History of England's Soundsystem Culture is published by Strange Attractor this year. A collaboration with the photographer Brian David Stevens, it's a series of 25 interviews across multiple generations, telling the story of blues dances, raves, pirate radio stations, the pop charts, and all the other places where Caribbean bass culture has infiltrated into the evolving English character.

As well as being a story of the music, it's an examination of how life stories overlap, interlock, and interweave: of how history is made up of real lives, both ordinary and extraordinary. And it's a story of glorious hybridisation, of a culture whose greatest strength is its mongrel nature. Joe will be here to discuss what he's learned from his interviewees, and how the deep reverberations of those basslines have reached into every corner of modern life.
