MCZO & Duke

[TZ]

From Tanzania, MCZO & Duke provide another taste of blistering, fast-paced singeli music. Taking inspiration from Zanzibarian tarab, South African house, gabber, and much more, the duo gained visibility beyond their local scene through their high energy set at Nyege Nyege Festival, which was broadcast globally via Boiler Room.

Along with Slikback, Sho Madjozi, and Phatstoki, MCZO & Duke represent the bleeding creative edge of Africa’s new wave of club performers. The duo hail from Dar Es Salaam, where singeli is emerging. Singeli is based on Bongo Flava beats, a popular style in Tanzania, sped up and given added power through laptop production. The style became popular thanks to Nyege Nyege Tapes’ compilation Sounds Of Sisso, which Boomkat described “a volley of hi-velocity missiles sounding like nothing else but in our minds comparable with full on Soca or Shangaan Electro styles as much as Northern British takes on happy hardcore and Makina.”
