Julia Tieke

Julia Tieke works with and around text and sound. She is affiliated with the Radio Art Department of Deutschlandfunk Kultur, where she has been directing the daily ultra-short, experimental Wurfsendung since 2007.

Tieke studied “Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Communication” at the University of Hildesheim and has recently taken up undergraduate studies at the Institute of Islamic Studies, Freie Universität Berlin, where she aims to further consolidate her focus on the Middle East. Recent research and projects include the World War I Lautarchiv recordings, the co-curation of digging deep, crossing far (2015-17 in Bangalore, Karachi, Berlin), the 12 channel audio installation Achtung, Aufnahme! (produced by HKW, installed at silentgreen, Berlin, 2016/17), and the audio drama training and production programme Esma3ni! (Goethe-Institut Alexandria, Egypt, 2018).

In 2019, Tieke will be working on a radio broadcast about Khyam Allami's latest work, as well as realising Karachi Beach Radio together with Yaminay Chaudhri. Karachi Beach Radio is a research based art project about socio-political, ecological, and sonic aspects of public beaches in Karachi, Pakistan.
