Lecture by Eleni Ikoniadou

This talk will speculate on the mysterious sound of "The Hum," a persistent and invasive low-frequency rumbling or droning noise often accompanied by vibrations. According to scientific literature dating back to the 1830s, this unidentified auditory phenomenon has no external reference and affects only a small fraction of a local population.

The alien humming sound has the power to bring forth the affective emptying of perception’s conscious activity. The rhythmic temporal convulsions it enables offer some sense that there are other layers outside lived experience.

Sound design by Paul Freeman from The Hum radio drama created by James O'Neill and Paul Freeman.
