ZULI is this year’s Radio Lab winner. For CTM 2018, he will create an installation using field recordings and 3D video footage from the streets of Cairo. ZULI is affiliated with the collective Kairo is Koming, as well as Lee Gamble’s imprint UIQ.
His first release on the label was the 2016 EP Bionic Ahmed, which ventures into a wide range of territory from IDM to hip hop, and also experiments in techno. His sound is at home on UIQ, alongside artists such as Lanark Artefax and Renick Bell. Bionic Ahmed is an amalgamation of a wide array of influences all funneled through ZULI’s distinctive approach to production.
2017 saw ZULI’s second release on the label entitled Numbers. The record explores IDM further, but also leans heavily on UK bass. Featuring broken rhythms and plenty of alien timbres, Numbers is the exciting continuation of the line of thought first heard in 2016. Recently, he remixed Petit Singe’s "OXO" for a remix release of Akash Ganga on Haunter Records.
ZULI is also known as one of the co-founders of VENT - a Cairo-based venue that has brought the likes of Huerco S., Bradley Zero and Aurora Halal to Egypt. In the past year, he has made appearances anywhere from Norberg Festival in Sweden to Torstraßen Festival in Berlin. You can catch his show on NTS on the last Tuesday of every month.
