Electric Indigo

Vienna-born Susanne Kirchmayr, known as Electric Indigo, is a composer, DJ, and musician with a career spanning two decades. Currently focusing on multi-channel installations that emphasize subtly elaborated sounds generated from speech recordings, she is also founder of female:pressure, an international network for female artists in the field of electronic music.

Beginning her career in the 1980s at a small DJ bar in Vienna, she eventually moved on to Roland and Korg gear before working at the seminal record store Hard Wax in Berlin in 1993, where she bought used synthesizers and drum machines from owner Mark Ernestus, also of Basic Channel, and from dub techno act René Löwe aka Vainqueur. Soon after, she started laying down her first tracks on a Digital Audio Tape, with no room for error. 10 years later, Kirchmayr founded indigo:inc recordings with the last 2009 EP on the label release dubbed Siberia.

For her efforts in the foundation of female:pressure, an international database and network for female artists in the fields of electronic music and digital arts, Kirchmayr was awarded the Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica 2009.

Recent installation works include compositions like the 4-channel "Structuring Contours”, pieces for the opera ABSTRIAL, and "MORPHEME," an audiovisual multi-channel concert of granular synthesis- together with the visual artist Thomas Wagensommerer.

Electric Indigo will curate the Vienna Popfest 2015 with the Trishes.
