The Research Networking Day provides a platform to exchange ideas and experiences for students and researchers from different European graduate and postgraduate programmes traversing the fields of audio, arts, media, design and related theoretical disciplines. The day's programme, organised with Humboldt University's Department of Musicology, will cover modules dealing with the psychology of music; fear; the relationship between art, emotions and technology and more.

Founded by Chino Amobi, nkisi, and Angel-Ho, the NON collective, whose multifaceted, holistic campaign of critique has quickly achieved widespread recognition over its two years of existence, groups together artists and producers from Africa and the international African diaspora into an independent digital nation state. NON’s three-night showcase at CTM 2017 will provide an opportunity to present some of the initiative’s protagonists, including acclaimed choreographer Ligia Lewis, Embaci, DJ Lady Lane, dancers Justin F. Kennedy and Jonathan Gonzalez, and artist/director Ariel Efraim Ashbel, alongside its founders in person (non-digitally) and using its full array of identifiers and exponents. The peformance runs 29, 30 and 31st of January at HAU2.

Running from 14 - 18h, diverse talks regroup researchers and professors exploring how our minds and bodies intertwine musical effects and emotions, how musical affect can create shared experience, as well as an examination of the “extended mind thesis,”  which argues that some of the artefacts and technologies we use to enhance our thinking – from sketchpads and smartphones to models and memory aids — can, under certain circumstances, become part of our minds. Lecturers Jonna Vuoskoski, Luis-Manuel Garcia and Joel Krueger then gather for a closing panel to sum up the day's discussions.

Today's talks complement the "Critical Constellations of the Audio-Machine in Mexico" exhibition and are also great primers for two days of concerts with many of the same Mexican sound artists, coming up at HAU2 on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 February. Angélica Castelló, Guillermo Galindo, Ariel Guzik, Roberto Morales Manzanares & more give different visions of music and sound against the backdrop of Mexico's nation-state project from the 20th century until the present.

Led by artist Pedro Oliveira and digital rights non-profit Tactical Tech, the workshop will inquire into the use of sound as a tool of violence and its ranges as a channel of dissidence. Participants will explore diverse sonic recordings and investigate them both from a subjective approach based on their own personal experiences and emotional responses, and from an extrapolated political context relevant to each recording. A few spots for this workshop are still open, and registration is free of charge.

Duo Ganzfeld (trumpet player and sound artist Liz Allbee and guitarist and instrument builder Sukandar Kartadinata) will present several guerilla audio spatialization interventions, at surprise times and locations throughout the rest of the festival. Their interventions will , as Allbee and Kartadinata radiate these instrumental voices into space through the use of their homemade dispersive audio system, which consists of wireless, luminescent adhesive transducer speakers with built-in multi-channel radio receivers. In a programme that explores challenging and confrontational dealings with sound, Thomas Ankersmit premieres a new work, "Infra," that explored the emotional, musical and perceptive potential of infrasound. Power electronics proponent Pharmakon will also present new material. Vomir's "harsh noise walls" and the psychedelic rhythmic explosion that is Gum Takes Tooth contribute more sonic intensities.
