Kamaal Williams is the Brownswood Recordings affiliate and London jazz scene stalwart “who ma[kes] music that gloriously distill[s] the city’s plurality.” (Pitchfork) He appears at Festsaal Kreuzberg, flanked by a full band. In 2018, the project released The Return, an excellent follow up to former duo Yussef Kamaal’s acclaimed Black Focus.

Uganda’s Nakibembe Xylophone Troupe are one of the few remaining groups that perform on the embaire—an extremely rare and gigantic indigenous wooden xylophone that is simultaneously played by eight musicians. Performers lock into a hypnotic, relentless polyphonic onslaught that transcends time and place, coalescing into one of the most complex and intriguing sonic forms in East Africa.

ARTISTS

Nakibembe Xylophone Troupe[UG]

The Nakibembe Xylophone Troupe hails from Uganda, known for singing and performing on a large ensemble instrument called the embaire, crafting hypnotic, joyful music. Having greatly expanded their audience following an acclaimed performance at Nyege Nyege Festival, they are one of the few remaining groups playing the embaire.

Kamaal Williams[UK]

Kamaal Williams is the latest project led by prolific South London artist Henry Wu. As the mastermind behind Yussef Kamaal, Wu released a landmark album for British jazz with 2016's Black Focus. This latest collective continues the tradition of fusing jazz with the sound of urban London, with a live show that captures all the raw energy for which Wu has become known.
