Gaika

[UK]

“Repeat after me // Fuck your Politics,” reads a video for Gaika’s 2017 Spectacular Empire. Gaika is a singular, enthralling artist from Brixton whose work is shapeshifting, pointed, and elusive.

Gaika’s arrival made a new statement in British music. His debut single, “Blasphemer”, combines melancholy melodies with circling, auto-tuned, distorted vocals, and was accompanied by a fitting video comprised of shuddering, overlaid shots of the artist. Gaika’s self-released mixtape from 2015, entitled Machine, is a pointed indictment of British colonialism, police brutality, and white supremacy, and was followed in 2016 by “3D” and SPAGHETTO, both on groundbreaking London label Warp Records. The artist has worked with the likes of Dean Blunt and Miss Red, and has shared a number of striking music videos for tracks such as “HECO” and “BOHDY KNOWS AT 90” (with Bipolar Sunshine).

In 2017, Gaika was appointed as Dazed Magazine’s new political editor. A text of his, published via the imprint, reads “What happens when authority is destroyed? When a city falls and is taken over?” Vocal in his opinions, he writes, “Authority is relative, I want to challenge authority, I want us all to.”
