DiskJokke[NO]

A space-disco ambassador out of Oslo, diskJokke helped introduce the city's innovative electronic music scene to the world alongside Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas. Born Joachim Dyrdahl, diskJokke was discovered by disco luminary Prins Thomas, who immediately signed three singles to his Full Pupp label.

Almost simultaneously, his quirky, spaced-out and dubby mixture of house, Italo and disco caught the ear of M.A.N.D.Y, who released one of his earliest records on their newly minted Get Physical sub-label, Kindisch.

A classically trained violinist, Diskjokke became interested in electronic music at the age of 15 when he discovered Norwegian DJ legend Olle Abstract's radio show. He naturally gravitated towards Norway’s premiere club night, Sunkissed, where he served as a resident DJ alongside Rune Lindbæk, Lindstrøm, Prins Thomas and Todd Terje. After studying mathematics for a number of years, he put his scholarly pursuits on hold in order to focus on music full-time; his discography includes three full-length albums for Smalltown Supersound, several singles and EPs, as well as remixes for a number of diverse artists including David Lynch, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Foals, Lykke Li and Bloc Party.

While diskJokke’s first two full-length albums, Staying In (2007) and Ein Fin Tid (2010) are characterized by poppy, melodic, Norwegian disco-house, his 2011 album, Sagara, saw the producer take a decidedly different turn. Commissioned by Norway’s Øya Festival, diskJokke traveled to Bali and Java, where he temporarily abandoned dance music to instead incorporate the tones and modalities of gamelan music into softer, more contemplative ambient pieces. Using the blur that can be created by the percussive sounds of gamelan, he put both his classical and electronic music training to work, revealing a careful ear and sense of structure that may not be evident in his more dance-oriented productions.
