SatIn this artist talk, which directly follows George E. Lewis’s lecture about machine subjectivities in interactive music, Lewis and collaborator Roscoe Mitchell will speak with The Wire writer Daniel Spicer. Both Lewis and Mitchell are two of the most prominent names in American experimental music and are both long-term members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. They will discuss the history of their individual and collaborative activities as performers, composers, activists, and scholars, and reflect on their February 2nd CTM performance with Voyager, Lewis’s improvising AI system.
George Lewis is Professor of American Music at Columbia University, and Area Chair in Composition. A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, Lewis’s other honors include a MacArthur Fellowship (2002) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2015).
The Chicago-born multi-instrumentalist Roscoe Mitchell was a founder of the influential Art Ensemble of Chicago and one of the first members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. His name is among the most legendary in avant-garde jazz, free jazz, and contemporary music.
Daniel Spicer is a writer, broadcaster, improviser and poet based in Brighton, UK. He writes about music for The Wire and Jazzwise magazines. His book on Turkish psychedelic music, Anadolu Psych, will be published by Repeater Books in March 2018, and he is currently working on a book about Peter Brötzmann.
