FriThis discussion and workshop focuses on issues around moderating community spaces – be they concert halls and clubs or online platforms. As an administrator and provider of an event, space, or community forum, how do you encourage contributors to voice their thoughts and feelings (thereby lending them power, agency, and representation) while simultaneously keeping the peace and helping to maintain a respectful, productive atmosphere?
Starting with an examination of challenges specific to online platforms, the discussion will then open up into questions that are relevant to both on/ and offline situations. The group of participants, together with contributions from the public, will work towards devising practical guidelines with concrete examples from their own practices, including insight into potential pitfalls and difficulties as well as into unlikely allies and creative solutions.
We warmly welcome all interested promoters, organisers, mediators, and members of the general public to actively join in the discussion.
Coral Foxworth[US]
Coral Foxworth aka FXWRK (pronounced “fox-work”) is a music producer/DJ, visual artist, member of KUNQ collective, and Global Director at SISTER.
Boo Lean[US]
Boo Lean (Lauren Goshinski), is an audio-visual curator and DJ behind some key underground platforms in North America. As a curator for New Forms Festival, co-founder of the VIA Festival, and resident DJ/booker at Hot Mass, she’s been recognized as one of the "top 50 women making noise" both on and off the stage.
Stella Plazonja[DE]
Stella Plazonja came to Hamburg in the early 90s and soon got involved with the Golden Pudel Club. She worked as a product-, artist- and labelmanager for Lado Musik and Yo Mama and was cofounder of Smallville Records.
Smiley Baldwin[DE]
Smiley Baldwin is a former US military officer deployed to West Berlin during the Cold War. He was instrumental to GI Disco in the 1980s and 90s, which brought Black American dance music to Berlin club culture. Today he is one of Berlin's most beloved bouncers and owns his own security company.
Christine Kakaire[AU/DE]
Christine has worked in music her entire adult life, and it's taken her from Creative Vibes in Sydney, to BM Soho and Juno Download in London, to Beatport and zero" in Berlin. She began writing for Australian street press magazines in the early 2000s, and currently works full-time as a freelance music journalist and content/curation specialist.
Luz[BE/DE]
LUZ is a DJ and the founder of Room 4 Resistance, a Berlin-based queer femme forward collective focused on community-building and creating safer space & visibility for underrepresented artists in dance music. R4R runs parties at ://about blank, curates panels and workshops to promote women, gender queers, non-binaries, trans, black and POC artists. The initiative aims to share knowledge, explore the political dimensions of the dance floor, and create bridges between different communities.
René Bosch[DE]
René Bosch works as a social editor at VICE Media since April 2017. He is currently leading the social media operations of the investigative and IT magazine “Motherboard.” He is founder of the Twitter Blog “The Dscherman” and former contributor to German media outlets such as “Der Tagesspiegel,” “Krautreporter,” and “Die Zeit”. René studied in Berlin, Nice, Ratisbon and St. Petersburg, and currently he lives in Berlin.
