My work explores complex technological systems to produce new forms of engagement and understanding of where power and politics reside in opaque or black-boxed technologies.

One project, The Dark Age of Connectionism, explicitly attempts to create open and transparent interactions with the complex systems underpinning always-listening technologies such as the Amazon Echo. Audience members must learn to withhold the sounds of their own presence around these devices in order to reveal the questions being asked to 'Alexa' by 'Siri'; questions which expose either the technologies and techniques around the construction of such devices, or echo the anxieties of living amongst them. Another project is Outlier, a cyborg augmentation to the act of reading which uses common technologies of algorithmic neural network text analysis to produce a 'hyperreal' soundscape, where disruptions in the binaural sound field correspond to algorithmic findings within the text.

My ongoing research and practice in the field of machine learning is becoming more focused upon methods to reveal hidden-layer processes in ML systems, inherent biases in both the data sets and code of machine learning systems, and the evolving application of them by exploitative governmental and corporate bodies.
