King Midas Sound & Fennesz
Lucy – live AV concert feat. Jon Jacobs & Ignazio Mortellaro

Hallucinatory quests, bleak future blues mutations, old legends and archetypes and powerful washes of sound from delicate to overwhelming swirl out from the stage in an evening that highlights the new collaboration between King Midas Sound and Fennesz, and the world premiere of incomparable techno-shaman Lucy’s new no laptop live AV show with Ignazio Mortellaro and John Jacobs.

Their landmark 2009 Hyperdub debut, Waiting for You, quickly established King Midas Sound as the forerunners of one of the bleakest, slowest mutations of hypnotic dub. The trio consists of Kevin Martin (The Bug), vocalist Kiki Hitomi, and singer/poet Roger Robinson, who described their new sound as “My Bloody Valentine in dub” as perfectly captured on their 2013 EP, Aroo. In the wake of Kevin Martin’s latest album, the massive Angels & Devils, the producer enters into the kaleidoscopic Editions project, creating Edition 1 (Ninja Tune, 2015) with collaborator number one, Christian Fennesz. The acclaimed guitarist with releases on Editions Mego and Touch creates shimmering, swirling electronic sounds of enormous range and complex musicality. Together, KMS and Fennesz create “hallucinatory tone poems of heartbreak, despair, disappearance, and displacement, with Martin and Fennesz’s sounds set adrift and reigned back in by Robinson & Hitomi’s complimentary, yet extremely different vocal presences. Cosmic blues meets a siren’s song.” (Ninja Tune)

With one eye aimed at making people dance and another looking to go more abstract, Lucy adeptly navigates dance music’s choppier waters. His Stroboscopic Artefacts label, which explores the eerie and impossible landscapes behind the borders of techno, has supported Kangding Ray, Dadub, Rrose or Xhin among others. Lucy’s critically acclaimed 2011 debut, Wordplay for Working Bees refused the obvious 4/4 route, laying the blueprint for the producer’s relentless questing (“precision and exploration” in his own words). Pointing into new musical territory, Lucy will present a new live AV show in support of new album, Self Mythology. Ignazio Mortellaro, Lucy’s brother and the person responsible for Stroboscopic Artefacts’s visual identity, creates a vision chamber for live projection. Starting with a “slow and slightly apprehensive down-river trip through the Amazon, or some similarly thriving but as-of-yet undiscovered terrain”, the interplay between a visual aesthetic evoking biotic/abiotic archetypes in nature’s design, the wordless, improvisational (yet still somehow narrative) vocals and flute of Jon Jacobs, and Lucy’s sound design journeys into an intimate audio ideosyncrasies while also referring back to the stories that have shaped human destiny for millennia. “This work is a meditation upon the reciprocity between personal hopes and fears and collective dreams and nightmares; an exploration of the endless interplay between the universal and the deeply individual.” (Stroboscopic Artefacts)
