Iceage

[DK]

Iceage are Elias Bender Ronnenfelt and Jakob Tvilling Pless, Johan Surrballe Wieth and Dan Kjaer Nielsen. It doesn’t do any good to cite influences – Iceage mix punk, post-punk, Goth, and hardcore as if they invented it.

Forming their band while at school in Copenhagen and aged around 12, they quickly became a vital part of the city’s heavy music scene. Now barely in their early twenties, they started out with self-titled Iceage (2009) on Denmark’s Escho label, the group’s steady home which proclaims to “document moments of spontaneity, … unusual and vibrant sounds from Denmark and beyond”. Despite an aversion to the limelight, Iceage made waves with their urgent, abrasive gloom when they surfaced with follow-up and debut full-length, New Brigade, in 2011. Overflowing with youthful energy, this 12-track sprint of an album crams the band’s youthful energy into just 24 minutes, and was recorded in 4 days.

The band can currently be found playing shows in every corner of America, sleeping on floors, bloodying noses and getting everyone from The New Yorker to VICE magazine very, very excited. Their shows are still notoriously physical, sometimes aggressive, often destructive and always fun. With a new album scheduled for release in January 2013, the group’s mash of frantic, disinterested, hardcore energy is a reminder that the fringe of the post-punk movement is still fighting tooth and nail. February 2013 will see the release of Iceages’s second album, You’re Nothing, on Matador Records.
