Hailing from Cairo is the ever-thrilling vocalist Nadah El Shazly. Her debut album Ahwar emerged via Nawa Recordings, a label run by Khyam Allami focusing on Middle Eastern artists, in 2017. Ahwar was produced together with Maurice Louka and Sam Shalabi (of The Dwarfs of East Agouza), and takes its name from the Arabic word for “marshlands”.

On her debut, El Shazly’s vocals are daring yet soft, expertly executed from start to finish. Her lyrics are poetic and vivid, forming images through phrases such as “‘I drown in a sea of saliva of lunatics.” Alongside five original tracks is a cover of Sayyid Darwish’s “Ana 'Ishiqt (I Once Loved)”. The album was produced between Canada and Egypt.

El Shazly’s ventures in music began with singing in a local punk band. Thereafter, she learned how to produce her own tracks. For this edition of CTM, El Shazly follows an appearance at Le Guess Who in Utrecht with her German debut. The solo performance, which takes place at HAU, is conceived for voice, several instruments and computer.
