Laurel Halo

[US/DE]

Laurel Halo's productions are shapeshifting masses, moody and ecstatic, with flashes of rhythmic brilliance mediated by modal simplicity.

Taking influence from the techno of her Midwest roots, the Berlin-based artist has developed a unique take on electronic music, combining the machine pulse of hardware and software instruments (synthesizers, samplers, drum machines) with her own voice to address physical process, liminality, and virtual violence. Her output as a producer began with a series of EPs released on Honest Jon’s, NNA Tapes, Hippos in Tanks, and Hyperdub. She took part in the FRKWYS series on its seventh LP alongside David Borden, James Ferraro, Samuel Godin, and Daniel Lopatin for Borden, Ferraro, Godin, Halo & Lopatin. In 2016, she soundtracked Still Be Here, a performance featuring Hatsune Miku that premiered at CTM and Transmediale.

Her eccentric, genre-defying productions have earned her a reputation as a producer with a singular, distinctive voice. Halo’s latest album, Dust, was released in 2017 to critical acclaim, and saw contributions from the likes of Julia Holter, Klein, Lafawndah and others. An eclectic tapestry of different sounds, genres and feelings, Dust undercuts all attempts at classification. Also an avid DJ, Halo hosts a monthly show on Berlin Community Radio, having cut her teeth as a freeform DJ on the legendary WCBN-FM station in her native city of Ann Arbor, MI.
