IOANN

[RU]

IOANN is the artist-moniker of Ivan Sapozhkov, haiing from Western-Siberia, Russia. Sapozhkov began to experiment with electronics and virtual instruments across the media of film, theatre, and avant-garde music before establishing the experimental studio and label Negativespace in 2014.

Sapozhkov graduated from the department of Philology at the Tyumen State University in 2006. As a child, he received training in classical music, though by the early 2000s, he was active in rock and metal bands. For several years, he toured as a guitarist and vocalist with mystic-metal band Molot Vedim, who released the well-received Asylum in 2004.

Since 2016, IOANN has held an artist’s residency at the Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest, Hungary, where he researches the perception and spatial projection of multidimensional sound structures. His main project, "Imagining the Hyperspace", takes the form of nine sonic sculptures of geometrical shapes – the shapes take on a multidimensional quality as listeners explore the pieces through movement and rotation. Imagining the Hyperspace seeks to explore sound and space beyond a mundane, everyday way of listening.
