Since emerging as a solo artist at the tail end of the 2000s, Sabina Plamenova has released a wealth of material under two separate aliases: Subeena and Alis. The Berlin-based producer runs her own imprints but has also published output on Planet Mu, Don’t Be Afraid, Plus100 and Astro:Dynamics, among others.
Since laying her Subeena moniker to rest, Plamenova has directed her attention exclusively to Alis, most recently releasing the Corporeal LP through the Athens, Georgia -based Plus100. The album, which features bleary-eyed ambient vocal experiments and earthy synth pop, is the clearest synthesis of the disparate aesthetics that have interested her since the beginning of her career.
Since the Alis project debuted on Plamenova’s own Opit label in 2012, it has fused Detroit-flavored techno, drone and a contemporary reworking of post-punk. After a sassy 12” of acid-house on Don’t Be Afraid, Alis took listeners by surprise with a 180º into expansive, intimate territory on Astro:Dynamics’s 2014 Things Next Door.
Plamenova hosts a monthly show on Berlin Community Radio.
