MFO[DE]

Marcel Weber is a visual artist who creates dynamic, surreal environments using a mix of analogue- and digitally generated imagery and light. He has collaborated with many esteemed artists, including Roly Porter and Jed Kurzel, Biosphere, James Ginzburg, Ben Frost, Clark, Kuedo, and Kode9.

Weber has been creating and directing audiovisual performances, installations, and video works since 2001 under his own name and as MFO (formerly a duo). Employing new and old media forms equally, Weber juxtaposes analogue projectors, film, lenses and mirrors, and paint and chemicals against digital compositions and generative software. His work carries a distinctive aesthetic, using images that both resonate with and form a relationship to sound. Applying music's ability to cut to the heart of our emotional worlds to the moving image, an uncommon and ethereal quality emerges, brought to life by Weber's passion for experimental narratives. His performances are concerned with memory and perception, identity formation, and dissolution — particularly in the context of possible futures and their underlying mythologies.

Weber is a resident visual artist for several event series focused on the exploration of contemporary electronic music in Berlin and internationally. He serves as the director of light and visuals at Berlin's Atonal festival, and his work has been commissioned and featured at leading experimental festivals such as Unsound and MUTEK and shown at renowned venues like the British Film Institute and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He has also contributed video design to houses of high culture, having worked with the Opera national de Paris, the Academy of Arts Berlin, at Sophiensaele Berlin, and with the Brut Theatre in Vienna on a variety of plays and opera productions.
