Julia Gerlach[DE]

Musicologist Julia Gerlach studied in Paris and Berlin. She is active as a freelance author, curator, and producer. Since 1992, she has published professional articles and edited books and catalogs on aesthetic issues in contemporary music. She has been active in curatorial and cultural politics in Berlin since 2001.

Gerlach has managed artists and projects in sound art and experimental music theater since 2002. In 2003, she founded the Berlin development and production office Klangquadrat together with the sound artist Georg Klein. Between 2008 and 2012, she held lectureships at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt and worked there on a project focusing on body, music, and gender. From 2009 to 2011, she was project coordinator at  ZKM | Institut für Musik und Akustik in Karlsruhe, and from 2011 to 2012 she was co-curator (together with Peter Weibel) and project leader of the exhibition "Sound Art Sound as a Medium of Art" at the ZKM Medienmuseum. Since October 2012, she has directed the music section at the Berlin Artists Programme of the DAAD, for which she developed the festival "micro-music". Gerlach is especially committed to the expansion of the notions of music and sound art, and to intercultural projects.
