Alex Yiu, aka Alexmalism, is a sound artist, music producer, curator, and a researcher based in Hong Kong. He is currently a PhD candidate in the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, where his research interests include the deconstructed club scene on social media, the Hong Kong underground music scene, and other related topics.
As one of the members of the local underground club music collective Absurd TRAX, he has performed and DJ’d at Shenzhen’s OIL, Shanghai’s ALL, Sónar Hong Kong, NTS Radio, and more. As a sound artist, he has exhibited at Para Site, A+ Contemporary, Burning Man by UNPOP, among others.
In 2018, he released single “Sombre” via London’s Chinabot, a platform that aims to challenge the narrative surrounding Asian music. His debut solo release, TKO, followed shortly after via Absurd TRAX. TKO considers the dysphoric, suburban yet utilitarian cityscape of Tseung Kwan O, where Yiu lived for 10 years. Known as “Junk Bay,” historically, Tseung Kwan O is located it the southeastern part of the New Territories. One of the nine new towns of Hong Kong developed by the colonial British government to accommodate the growing population, it is where the South East New Territories Landfill is located.
