12:00 Beats, Flesh, and Grain: Sonic Tactility and Affect in Electronic Dance Music
Luis-Manuel Garcia [NL], University of Groningen / Max Planck Institut for Educational Research
This presentation sets out to explore the tactilization of sound in electronic music, which offers an important sensory-affective bridge between touch, sonic experience, and an expansive sense of connection in dancing crowds. Electronic music invokes tactility through a range of modalities, of which three will be the focus of this presentation: percussive “beats,” fleshy timbre, and sonic grain—all of which resonate with heightened haptic experience. The notion of sonic grain will be developed through a close engagement with the work of musique concrète pioneer Pierre Schaeffer.

14:00 Crack in the City
Daisuke Ishide [JP/DE], Berlin University of the Arts (UdK)
Daisuke Ishida talks about the public intervention project "Crack in the City” which was held at the class “Sound, Art and Technology-poiesis” at UNI.K Studio für Klangkunst und Klangforschung, The Berlin University of the Arts. Crack in the City is a project dedicated to create sound installations/actions reflected upon public space (i.e Berlin's Hermannplatz). The urban everyday life is completely surrounded by various kinsd of sounds, yet, it is not necessary that we are continuously acknowledging, or even hearing them. The project’s aim is to bring an experiential artistic activity to our auditory everyday life, in order to expand our understanding of public space itself, its sound with aesthetic qualities and beyond.
