WedA night collectively hosted by CTM and transmediale weaves together music, sound, and intermedia performance.
With his performance lecture “Chthonia,” sound artist and researcher Wesley Goatley presents a conversation between Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri, who expose their hidden politics and the limitations of the AI technologies that shape them (featuring visual art by Sougwen). “ECHO FX,” by the Demystification Committee, replays the Brexit vote through echoes of misinformation spread through networks with the aim of inflating the pound, rendering these events in an A/V performance. The complex entanglement of bodies, sex, technology, and plastics is the subject of Johanna Bruckner’s dance and media performance “Sym-poetic Desires.” xin mangles and strangles fragments of neurofunk, hardcore, and dubstep, as heard on their debut LP, MELTS INTO LOVE; costume by Ditte Marie Tygesen. Patiño & Schuttel premiere a new, especially commissioned spatial work titled “No Laughing Matter,” exploring laughter in relation to bodily presence and acousmatic sound. emptyset, the duo of Paul Purgas and James Ginzburg, presents a live version of Blossoms, their recent album for Thrill Jockey, which manifests their collaborations with machine learning systems.
Presented with transmediale. Entry is included in E2E passes.
Johanna Bruckner is supported by Pro Helvetia, Swiss Arts Council. xin is supported by SHAPE, which is cofunded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
Wesley Goatley is a sound artist and researcher based in London, UK. His installations, sound objects, and live audio-visual performances critique the common language and imagery used to describe data and artificial intelligence, and the power these symbols have in shaping the world and our understanding of it.
The Demystification Committee investigates deep systems of power that shape contemporary society through the study of platforms and networks, producing visual and sound work. Seeking alternative narratives to the myths of late capitalism, the practice currently focuses on the relationship between sovereignty and capital, and on the friction between communication networks and infrastructures of power.
Johanna Bruckner is an artist working across media who is fascinated by changes in labour emerging in response to new capitalist technologies.
Rubén Patiño and Kay Schuttel are interdisciplinary artists working across sound and performance. At CTM 2020, the pair premiere their new work “No Laughing Matter,” which explores laughing in relation to bodily presence and acousmatic sound. As laughter is seen as a uniquely human gesture, the sound of laughter is employed as compositional material for psychological conditioning in their performance
xin is a Berlin-based artist, writer, and musician, whose debut LP, MELTS INTO LOVE, is “a deliriously psychedelic record [that] slithers in and out of the brain with the visceral body horror of a David Cronenberg movie.” (FACT) Released via Subtext this past September, the record mines fragments of neurofunk, hardcore, and dubstep to warp, mangle and strangle them into something anew.
emptyset is a multidisciplinary production project founded founded by James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas exploring the sonic possibilities of electroacoustic and computer music, architecture, and performance. Recent record Blossoms, released via Thrill Jockey, comprises a series of experimental collaborations with a machine learning system.
