ThuDuring CTM, MONOM – Berlin's Center for Spatial Sound – which is home to the 4DSOUND system will become a place to switch off unwanted disturbances and immerse oneself in vivid sonic worlds.
Sound is a medium that we experience with our entire body. Similarly, the 4DSOUND system is a habitable instrument that merges with and decentralizes the performance space, allowing for sound to come from all around us and move through us. Experiencing sound in this way opens us up to emotional and physical responses inscribed in our ancient and recent memories, providing an opportunity to experience our senses as a gateway to more meaningful connections between inner and outer space and to transcend the turmoil.
For this evening, MONOM have commissioned FIS and Pan Daijing to use their spatial 4DSOUND system to build intensely visceral experiences that will range from calming to thought-provoking and radical. Artist and researcher IOANN will present "Imagining the Hyperspace", a work he developed during a residency at the Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest. The work seeks to reveal the multidimensional nature of listening by exploring complex 4-dimensional geometrical shapes in sound. Listeners will in turn become aware that the construct of space we perceive is an attribute of our consciousness, and that this perception can be altered.
Transcend the Turmoil is a collaboration between MONOM, Spatial Sound Institute and CTM Festival.
Pan Daijing makes music, art, and tells stories. Born and raised in Guiyang, Southwest China, she has been based in Berlin since 2016. Rooted in noise music, her raw approach as a composer and performer takes many forms; primarily performance art, sound, dance and installation, hinging heavily on improvisation and acts of storytelling.
New Zealand-born Berlin resident Olly Peryman or FIS constructs visceral, detail-oriented glacial sound masses and has reflected thoughtfully on music-making as a practice. He has released on the likes of Tri Angle, Loopy, Samurai Music, and Subtext.
IOANN is the artist-moniker of Ivan Sapozhkov, haiing from Western-Siberia, Russia. Sapozhkov began to experiment with electronics and virtual instruments across the media of film, theatre, and avant-garde music before establishing the experimental studio and label Negativespace in 2014.
