dj. flugvél og geimskip (or “Airplane and Spaceship) promises unapologetically quirky, eccentric performances. Contrary to what her name might suggest, the Icelandic artist crafts crafts cosmic electronic pop.
Saturated and spacey, dj. flugvél og geimskip’s music marks an odyssey through bizarre sounds. In her own words, dj. flugvél og geimskip makes “fun horrormusic filled with nonsense and magic,” which borrows and learns from the likes of Joe Meek, The Prodigy, Peaches, and more.
Known as a polymath who disregards conventions, dj. flugvél og geimskip delivered her first performance at the age of one, during which she rapped the mantra “sheep in a can.” At age five, she received her first Fisher Price recording device, which catalysed a lifelong interest in unconventional, playful instrumentation.
In 2015, she released Nótt Á Hafsbotni (or “Night at the Bottom of the Ocean"). The squelchy, lo-fi oddity was nominated for the Icelandic Music Awards’ Best Pop Album. More recently, she released a psychedelic computer game ahead of forthcoming record Our Atlantis. Allowing fans to venture through her psychedelic world, the Our Atlantis video game can be found on her website.
Confounding convention, dj. flugvél og geimskip funnels a love for space into dreamlike music and performances that take shape through a multitude of moving parts. “She’s quite clearly in a world of her own, but dj. flugvél og geimskip is very accommodating of visitors, so you might as well stay a while.” (Drowned in Sound)
