CURL is a collective, label, and community formed by artists Brother May, Coby Sey, and Mica Levi. With roots across London, the group’s members are involved and affiliated with the likes of NTS Radio and Whities Records.
MC and vocalist Brother May has two releases out on CURL - 2016’s May and Meeks, and 2017’s “U Kno”. Both assert a warmth and joy that are crucial to today’s musical landscape. Coby Sey is an NTS Radio regular, who has released music via Whities, Bokkle, and on his own. Though he is perhaps best known for his Whities EP, Transport for Lewisham, the South Londoner’s output also includes a string of collaborations with artists such as Dels, Klein, and Tirzah.
Singer, songwriter, composer, and producer Mica Levi, or Micachu, needs little introduction. She trained at renowned institutions such as the Purcell School, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Levi is known for her work with band The Shapes (now called Good Sad Happy Bad), as well as her film scores for Under the Skin (2014) and Jackie (2016).
As CURL, they have performed at venues such as London’s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), The Roundhouse, and Southbank Centre. 2018 saw them host an event at the Serpentine Pavilion which welcomed performances from opera singer Mohamed, and singer-producer Bianca Scout. They have released music from Taz & Meeks, Bedsheet, Silv-o, and others, and their eclectic catalog folds jazz, grime, experimental soundscapes, and hip hop into one another.
