On a night showcasing artists driven by emotional turmoil to create, Belgian post-metal band Amenra will take the stage with a brooding, emotive style that grew out of experiences of loss and pain. The five-piece band is fronted by vocalist Colin van Eeckhout, who speaks openly about their music’s role as an outlet for “the things that cast a shadow over existence” – solitude, melancholy, sadness, demons, the certainty of death. Their newest album, Mass VI,  reflects on contrasts central to human existence – light and darkness, hope and despair – via disparate styles, from contemplative textures to sonic enormity.

Scott Kelly, who is best known as the frontman of legendary post-metal band Neurosis and also for his work with Shrinebuilder, Tribes of Neurot, and Mastodon, will open for Amenra joined by the complementary and nuanced sounds of Rwake’s John Judkins. In its bare frankness and deeply personal spirituality, Kelly’s fearlessly introspective songwriting speaks of its function and faculty to help withstand the struggles and pains of life. Neurot, the label he started collectively with Neurosis, has released albums by many like-minded artists and bands, including Amenra.
